This weeks Autocar magazine, the 28th August, includes a free brochure entitled "Volkswagen Golf GTI - Celebrating 25 years of a motoring legend".
This is absolute vital reading for any veedub enthusiast, I would thoroughly recommend buying it!

It includes reprinted original roadtests of the mk1, mk2 and mk3, a track day comparing them all plus numerous bits of info.
Extract: 'In Britian the mk2 has been the most popular generation so far, with 83,456 sold between 1984 and 1992. Sales of the mk3, launched during the early nineties recession totalled only 39,766 though the mk4 is doing well with over 50,000 sold in the four years to the end of 2001. Mk1 sales were 24,340 while over the 25 year period the GTI has made up 22.5% of the UK Golf total.'
